Dollar Civic Trust

Dollar Civic Trust

Dollar Civic Trust is a non profit-making organisation with charitable aims dedicated to preserving and enhancing the built and natural heritage of the town of Dollar in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. It is the one of the oldest local Civic Trusts in the country.
Established in 1969, in order to save the area behind the local golf course from becoming a housing development. The Trust has been instrumental in achieving many benefits for the town.

Dollar Conservation Area

Dollar Civic Trust was instrumental in establishing the Dollar Conservation Area (1974) which has successfully maintained the quality of the town centre, in comparison with other towns in the area. The Conservation Area and the built heritage in Dollar is an important factor not just in the character of the town, but also the value of property.

Recent relaxations in planning legislation however, make it increasingly difficult to protect historic buildings which are not in the conservation area. Clackmannanshire Council are long overdue a conservation area appraisal to monitor the situation.

The Trust keeps a watchful eye over planning applications and supports many efforts to maintain and improve standards of development in the area. At the same time, the Trust objects when proposals are not ‘in keeping’with the Conservation Area or are insensitive to natural heritage interests. Recently the Trust has worked with Dollar Academy and St James’ Church where we have been able to help provide the highest quality interventions to these important buildings.

The Trust would like to help developers in tailoring their proposals to be in sympathy with the built and natural heritage of the town and have been involved increasingly in pre-application consultations.

Community Engagement

The Trust does much to involve the community, but is particularly keen to involve more young people in the protection and enhancement of their heritage. A walks programme has been developed, including well-attended guided walking tours of the Japanese garden, as well the Town Trail. The Trust publishes both a local walks leaflet and a Town trail leaflet. The Trust is actively involved with both Strathdevon Primary School and Dollar Academy to raise awareness of the historic environment.

The Trust has a steady membership of over 300 people, but there is always room for more. Go to our membership section for details of how to join.
